演講摘要

Over the last decade, a range of new technologies have evolved and become embedded in education. I therefore present arguments claiming that while these and other digital tools can be designed to promote our aspirations for quality learning, they may also distract, so purposeful use is essential. In his seminal book The Computer in the School, published in 1980, Robert Taylor recognized that the computer would have multiple roles in education. Taylor’s subtitle for the book, Tutor, Tool, Tutee, was descriptive of the most innovative pedagogical practices at that time. Today, with new digital technologies being applied purposefully and effectively to maximize human potential, I suggest in this chapter that we can add a fourth T to Taylor’s T’s, that of transformer, so tutor, tool, tutee, transformer. For me, a central purpose is empowerment, that is, the degree of autonomy each learner has over the pace and content of his or her learning relative to the needs of his or her community of learners. Illustrations include K-12 music education and social studies as well as encouraging bilingualism in New Zealand.
