演講摘要｜

    Research in cognitive science has given us an enormous amount of knowledge about the human mind. We have so much knowledge, in fact, that it is virtually impossible for anyone to deal with more than a tiny fraction of it. The natural result is that researchers tend to adopt a relatively narrow focus, staying largely within their own area of specialization. While much can be learned about each area in this way, there are serious limitations. First, the various specialized areas are all related to one another and so research in one should be able to benefit from findings and theories in the others: More interaction is needed. Maybe even more importantly, the ultimate goal of cognitive science is to understand the human mind: If we are to have any genuine understanding, the various areas must eventually be brought together to make a coherent picture of the mind. The MOGUL project is a very ambitious effort to develop a framework within which findings from a wide variety of research areas within cognitive science can be brought together, hopefully leading to a coherent overall picture of the mind. MOGUL – Modular Online Growth and Use of Language – began, as its name suggests, as a framework for studying language, especially second language acquisition. But understanding language necessarily means understanding its place in the human mind, so the broader goal of establishing a general cognitive framework followed naturally. Because of this greater breadth, we now often use the name Modular Cognition Framework (MCF), with MOGUL as one part of it. The talk will present the motivation for the project, the proposed cognitive architecture, the nature of processing, the way that learning (growth) occurs, and a brief overview of the many topics the framework has been applied to.
